Archeologists find a series of hidden tunnels below Alcatraz prison.

San Francisco news:
Archeologists suspected for a long time that there were a series of tunnels below the prison and now it is a confirmation .The prison was built Over a Civil war military fortification so it would stand to reason there would be tunnels , but entrances were well hidden till lately discovered.Researchers found a series of tunnels and buildings under the Prison courtyard or exercise yard developed for the prisoners to exercise freely inside the walls. The tunnels wer discovered when the archeologists used ground penetrating radar in order to pin point the openings of the tunnels which were well hidden to the naked eye , they found fully buried structures , ammunition bunkers and tunnels.
Alcatraz first came to the forefront as a mystery when the prison was built in the 20th century..and as Alcatraz came to the attention of the US government after it took control of California from Mexico in the 1840's..its location in San Francisco bay made it perfect for military fortification.During the Civil war Fort Alcatraz was the official military prison for the West Coast. In the 1930's the first federal prisoners deemed to be the worst of the worst came to Alcatraz ..The last inmate left the prison in 1963.
Archeologists are now making plans to do more exploration to see what else can be uncovered .One very notorious prisoner of Alcatraz was the famous Al Gabriel Capone , a gangster who was well know in the world of American history , also known as " scarface".He attained notoriety during the prohibition as a co-founder and boss of the Chicago Outfit. His reign as boss ended at the age of 33..

I would imagine that's how they did I read one article not so long ago about one of the tunnels collapsing after the third prisoner escaped and it may have been discussed as to why the guards and the other prisoners heard it but couldn't pinpoint where the noise cam from..

It still cracks me up that of all the things they could have gotten Al Capone on, it was tax evasion what done 'im in. Tough problems need creative solutions.

As for the tunnels below, I wonder what may have been left behind in them.

Weird movie idea: a long lost thought-to-have-escaped prisoner hiding in the tunnels, not even aware the prison was closed. Like the Japanese soldiers who were not aware the war was over.

Even an herb as sweet as basil is nothing without its bite.

Lol yes about what the archeologists will find as more exploration is the ongoing thing .I seen a couple movies over the years and remember the " Bird Man of Alcatraz " as being the one stuck in my mind the most ..I liked that movie ..there was so many versions with so many actors after awhile the real version got lost..Should be interesting what they find down there indeed.

the tunnels are part of an old Fort the island was formerly a place where Fort Alcatraz used to be .it was a harbour stronghold from invasions from the sea when also had been a military prison..The tunnels were left when the real Alcatraz prison was built and what lay below was covered up and now its just been uncovered..
