Sadly the history of civilization/mankind is fragmentary, and each new discovery of ancient artifacts helps to fill in the missing pieces. A lot of 'ancient' knowledge and know-how has been lost, mostly due to human wilful destruction (book burning, pillaging, and the like).

It's ironic that what has survived and is now being discovered, is because of the natural elements' (namely, the seabed, and soil) ability to preserve the artifacts through the passage of time until the present day.

If the astrolabe is comparable to a smartphone, then what is the Antikythera mechanism?
