Is the zipper on a dress called a fly ? I feel like its not . I feel like that's only for pants . But why ? Where does that expression originate ?

Recently I fell prey to that old prank where you get invited somewhere and you show up and everyone ditched you . Its been a while since that happened but it used to totally be my jam - I was the guy you would ditch and then have a good laugh . It got me to thinking , it may or may not be the oldest gag in the world but if its not it has to be one of the oldest . I mean Jesus did it . "I'll see you in my tomb in three days" and they roll away the stone to find nobody . Good one Jesus ! Jesus doesn't get enough credit for his humor . I mean his "meek shall inherit the earth" bit ? Classic . And people have been copying his "I am the way , the truth , and the life" shtick for , like , ever .

I feel like the reason this jape has such longevity because as long as you pick the right target it always works . A sad sack like me is going to fall for it every time because we want it to be true . When someone invites me to do something I know in my heart of hearts its a scam and I'll be left standing in cornfield while they whip crab apples at me weeping my little eyes out - but I go for it anyone because what if it isn't a scam ? I'm so desperate for any kind of human interaction that I'm willing to take that chance . That's what makes the joke so funny - you burn someone who has nothing and no one . If that isn't humor I don't know what is .

Its like that old experiment from the 50's (when it was totally okay to torture animals - now at least they keep that shit hid) where they shock the monkey every time it tries to get the food they put out for it . The monkey knows its going to get shocked but eventually it reaches out because its so hungry it can't take it anymore . Maybe it won't get shocked this time right ? Its the same kind of thing - eventually you're going to reach out to other people even knowing you're probably going to get said hand clamped in a vice and pinecones shoved up your butt for your trouble .

This got me to thinking about humor overall . Has comedy always been around ? And if so in what format ? Was there one caveman who made all the other cavemen laugh ? I say caveman instead of cavewoman because as Cosmo proved women aren't funny . Or has human life mostly been so hard and miserable that there was no time for the funny until relatively recently ?

You know what would be a funny bit ? Every now and then you see in the news where some sexy celeb agrees to go out with some earnest loser who invited them to prom on the social media . What would be funny is if , say Scarlett Johansson , gets to said prom and they Carrie her - you know , the old pig blood gag . And then the dude who invited her shouts in her bloodface "The Girl With the Pearl Earing sucked !" and everyone points and laughs . Now that I say it I'm surprised it hasn't happened already , humanity being what it is .

As long as I'm being a downer , lets go to this . I've never actually watched Clerks 2 all the way through but I've seen most of it here and there at different times . Its pretty much what you expect from a sequel , generally it sucks but it reminds you of the original that you did like . There is one bit that strikes a chord with me though . There is a part in it where Randall goes off about how screwed he is if his only friend moves away because he’s getting older and “I hate everyone and everything’s stupid to me .” That's something I should probably worry about . But I feel like friendship is one of those things that a sliding scale . If all your friends leave you find someone else , you don't like them as much , but its better than being alone so you make the most of it . No one likes you , you don't like them and that's how we live .

In lighter news I was asked to write a skit on sexual harassment for HR at work and guess what happened ? People who watched it were highly offended by the sexual nature of the content . If that's not irony I don't know what is . Oh its not ? I guess I don't know what is . In my defense I will say two things . First , if you really want to show people what sexual harassment is like its going to be offensive . Its an offensive thing . It should make you uncomfortable . If it doesn't what impact did it have ? Everyone knows what sexual harassment is , if you're going to present something it has to be something with some resonance . And secondly , what did they expect ? Its me ! I feel like they're the ones to blame for asking me in the first place . Its like that old tale of the turtle and the scorpion .

Is this part ironic ? When I was casting the skit the local actress who got the part , I gave it to her because she blew me . That's not irony either ! Not even dramatic irony ?

And finally , does this ever happen to you ? This lady came up to me all pissed off asking for an apology and I asked her why . And she told me something I had said to her and I had forgotten saying it - and it was funny so I started laughing . Which you know , just pissed her off more . And I felt terrible because I wasn't trying to be an asshole but I had forgotten about saying it . And it was a good line . Classic 40 .

I'm fairly certain humor has been around for a really long time. I can imagine a Neanderthal painstakingly chiseling a block of stone to make a square table with a hole for a patio umbrella and a bunch of his "buddies" rounded off the corners as a joke. True --- that got something called a wheel invented but sheesh .... we had to wait eons for patio tables!

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

True , although before patios its just a table right ?
