baby, baby

this is my third attempt to post this......let's see what happens

around 9 on tuesday night, i stopped at the family shelter to check on one of the ladies and see if i could get her to agree to mental health services. no luck there.

at the moment, three of our moms are pregnant and C is about 11 months so we've all been waiting for her little one to appear.

C has had three so far. two of them are in state custody, one is just ....lost. there is some conjecture on the part of dcf that that was killed so they are actively watching her to see how she deals with this next . C speaks no english, is marginally retarded and has had a very difficult pregnancy. she watches all the other moms and their and i can see the desire in her eyes. but she has no sense of consequences and was using heavily when she came to us and still smokes like a fiend.

she was on the porch smoking when i got there. i gave her the mother superior look and she just grinned at me. we hung out enjoying the cool breeze and then i noticed her pants were soaking wet. OMG.

i yelled for the staff person...no answer. C was yanking her pants off and i could see the baby's head crowning. i lost it.
screamed for all the moms and 5 of them trampled down stairs, in tow, took one look and backed against the wall. looked like a damn line up.

i'm now screaming call 911, call 911 and they all stared at me like i was insane. who's that, who's that? one yelled back. no, no, 9...1...1...
oh

C is the color of clay and she's crying. i don't understand what she's saying as i don't speak spanish but i'm pretty sure she wasn't asking for coffee...she pushes herself up onto the table and lies back. the moms scatter.

the head is nearly out, i can see eyes and a nose....so i toss my shawl onto the table under her legs and make the universal sign for push. and she nods and does.

NOW the bell rings - the emts......saved!

nope, no one will answer the door. it's a house rule that only staff answer the door because some of our moms are DV survivors and we don't let anyone in until they've signed in, etc. great rule, damn fucking stupid ass rule. i look down, no time to get the door, this baby is nearly here and as i put my hands out, she drops into them. a flood of stuff ( no need to describe said stuff - but i'm burning my shawl) and then a deliciously loud wail.

the emts come into the room then...take one look and the big one drops into a chair and turns green. the other one is a bit more together and asks what he can do...WTF????

i place the little one on her mama's chest and point to the cord.

oh...yeah.

she's beautiful.......they're both beautiful........life in its most amazing moment. and right there in the shelter.

the moms drift back in....all smiles now. and someone hands C a blanket to put over the baby. the emts get them loaded into the ambulance and we all stand there waving....grinning like idiots and everyone talking at once.

not a bad night...not bad at all

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

You are my hero. You will need a new cape, but that is a small price to pay for the little life you helped into this world. Bad as the mother may be it touched a real mother first. Yes, YOU.

"not a bad night...not bad at all"

I'd say that is the understatement of the century! Awesome is what it is ~~ you were certainly where you were supposed to be that time!

Though I admire your heart, greatly, we...

I suppose being considered an asshole is just what I do best. So, to take it from that angle (no pun intended)... if this situation, as you've minimally (no other background) described it, isn't the poster-child explanation of the need for mandatory sterilization--in the least, physically-forced birth control (under these specific circumstances); and I'm not talking about abortion--then I don't know what would be. And let me clarify that I am NOT referring to any formalized or institutionalized planned eugenics.

I'm not big on sterilization for anyone, generally speaking, and certainly not for purely public/private financial reasons. Then again, I ain't really big on having someone who is, apparently, totally incapable of mothering, with or without public/private assistance (or perhaps, as alluded, given to harming a child... out of incapacity) being allowed by society to serially compound the problem with pregnancy.

I'm glad you could help, we; I truly am. But, I'd rather you didn't have to. We, as a people (human beings), should be willing and able to make those decisions (unpleasant as they may seem to some) for the good of all--her children, her, and society, as a whole.

oh solar i couldn't agree more. dcf is actually thinking of letting her keep this child and we're fighting for placement. C is not able to understand the simplest consequence so i am hoping they hear us.

but my issue with sterilization is who decides and how and when and couldn't they make a mistake?

we've asked for C to sign to get her tubes tied but she refuses. so i am afraid she will continue to produce......

Wicked, you done good! I hope that the baby makes it ok, and sounds like she will.

Happy Birth Day

she's quite beautiful if a bit tiny. and tbh - i don't see this situation improving unless dcf places her for adoption.

WOW.

I can't think of anything else to say, but WOW. And thank God you were there!

Blessing to the little one...and blessings to you, dear we.

Wow, we, that brought tears to my eyes. What a scary and amazing moment for you.

And parenthetically - I kind of have to agree with solar - it is the one political arena where I am not a liberal. To me, if someone has already proven that they are unsuitable as a parent - put them on Norplant and re-evaluate in five years...

wickedeasy replies on 5/30/2009 11:37 am:
nods........once the miracle is over, and reality sets in there is little hope that C will keep this child past a month.

and they will not implant without permission.

we...

With the current state of medical technology, forced birth control should not, even remotely, be considered as irreversible, nor off the table. And, yes, sterilization is not something to be toyed with, as a "mistake" can be made... on a first-shot basis. But, as you've described, this ain't the first shot.

I can't see how rational humans with even reasonable levels of secular compassion could deny the overall benefits of preventing any further pregnancies, in this and similar cases. The outcome of any such decision can't possibly be worse than ignoring the facts.

We can allow for unwanted children to be aborted at virtually any point in their development (apparently even potentially after birth), and yet still be concerned that we might "violate" the right of some woman to chose (or to allow herself, by default) to become pregnant despite overwhelming evidence it is merely the result of her totally irrational behavior (resulting from whatever causes.) It seems quite the time for a legal test of competency, to me, for both her... and the powers-that-be!

And we call ourselves civilized, let alone spiritual? It's no wonder to me that society, at large, is devolving into a mass of decaying fetal goo, right along with babies; be they unborn or born. Jesus.

oh solar - even if i agreed, i'd be hard put to force someone into something. it's like telling someone who is schizophrnic that they have to take meds. it is after al still a choice. maybe not a good choice, but their choice.

so yes, until we're living in orwell's world, no one can force this woman into birth control....but we can work with dcf to ameliorate the harm to the child...and unfortunately, that's about all we can do
