 I think it depends on the person. Some people have The One, others can't be happy with anyone.

And even if there is The One, it doesn't guarantee that we know who that one is, and it can take a few Not The Ones to realize when we finally find The One.

 Is the thought about Freewill or is the question about the One(your other half that you were born without and who completes you, if the poets are to be believed). It is hard to say that we don't have freewill people make uncharacteristic decisions all the time both for good and ill of themselves and others. If you make a series of poor choices and you find yourself where you don't want to be, you don't get to absolve yourself from blame by claiming it was meant to be.

The concept of the One and Only Perfect partner is a whole other question

 I think we have free will but I hate the term and there's no such thing as The One.

Let's start with free will. No person is an island. We are social creatures and we learn about the world from those who came before us. And they set a path either consciously or unconsciously that makes it easier to follow. But we have the ability to make our own path in our lives but it's not easy and you could fail and slide into the path created for you like it was predestined. That doesn't mean that it was.

As for The One. There's no one person out there that you're have to find that will complete you. Romance killed love because you don't find a perfect fit you make it. A relationship is a project that you never stop building. The one is the person who you trust completely to keep working even when things get tough and to pick up the slack when you get tired.
