4th of July fireworks are boring
4th of July fireworks are boring Yes, I said it...BORING!! Having grown up....okay, not really grown up but acquired years of existence... in San Diego I was lucky enough to have seen the evolution of Sky Show. Huh? You don't know what Sky Show is? Allow me... Waaayyyyyy back in like mid 1970s local radio station KGB decided to host a fireworks show not associated with Independence Day, by several months no less. The first 8 or 9 years of the show featured an afternoon of rock concerts at Qualcomm Stadium (back then it was known as Jack Murphy Stadium, named after local sports writer Jack Murphy) followed by the fireworks show. Each year the concerts got better and better as did the fireworks Some time along the way they started playing music to go along with the fireworks. My first experience attending Sky Show was number VII featuring Joan Jett, Chuck Berry and Cheap Trick along with a few local bands The next year featured headliner Motley Crue...I had a ticket but no ride so I ended up not going At one point a few years later too many women complained, rightfully so, about too many men invading the women's restroom and there were reports of a couple of sexual assaults After those incidents the radio station decided to do the Sky Show after Aztec football games then later they changed it to happen after Padre games. These days they just do it whenever and wherever they want One of the last ones I attended was when they did it on the bay....using 5 barges out on the water spaced apart covering about a mile and a half In the evolution of Sky Show the displays became longer and longer, anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. One year my friend and I organized a group outing and we arranged for a large group of our friends to occupy a press box during the game. One price gave us the game, all the food and drinks we could consume as well as the Sky Show. It was quite the party We did that a few years in a row On one of those occasions the Sky Show featured about 1,000 percussion bursts at the end. For those who may not know, a percussion burst is simply a low altitude charge which goes up about 200 feet and explodes with a LOUD boom, no colors or anything fancy, just BOOM I like those It took about 5 minutes to shoot them all off. I like that The next year they did 5,000 The year after that they did 10,000 ...\8 I have always liked the ones that go waaayyyyyyy up high.... you know, you hear the "foom" of the ignition and launch and an hour later it explodes about 20 miles high and fills the whole sky!! They do a ton of those along with colored themes, shapes which correspond to the musical themes etc. Sky show has always been quite the spectacular event, hundreds of thousands of people attend...yes, traffic and parking suck donkey balls but it's well worth it, trust me I hope now you can understand why I say the 15-20 minute 4th of July shows are boring Everyone is on a different plane of intelligence. Some people's plane has not taken off yet!! |

I love fireworks! I rarely get to see any in person, and thus any show is a good show to me lol

I used to like fireworks more. Now that I'm older I'm not all that keen on loud noises and bright sparkly things. It scares the wildlife and a lot of dogs, too. Men DO like making a ruckus, though. My wife says that's one of the usual differences between men and women. A few weeks ago PD and I had an afternoon tryst before heading out on a day trip. Instead of lying in bed cuddling and talking we got up afterward to get ready to go to the lake. Right then the house began to rattle and shake violently- we had an earthquake. They're rare around here, and it's even more rare to have one that dramatic. This was a four point something on the Richter scale. I bragged to anyone who'd sit still and listen that I had caused it. And PD said that if a thing like that happens a woman will be mortified as in: "Did I cause that! I'm so sorry!" But a man will say: "Yep! I did that! That was me! Pretty fucking cool, huh?" yes, I can imagine how the usual displays must seem boring in comparison. I do love to see fireworks, but half of the excitement is having someone to share the excitement with, and finding someone to go with is the hard part. I can't drive so can't offer to get someone, so always feel like I am imposing to make someone else come pick me up to go see them. I miss out a lot on life that way.
