Dealing with fake (scammers) members....

"There is a sucker born everyday". David Hannum made this statement about the paying customers of showman PT Barnum. While it is an interesting saying, and many smile at that idea, the truth is many men and women get taken by fraud/deceit everyday online.

Catfishing: defined as someone who pretends to be someone they're not using online site or other social media to create false identities, particularly to pursue deceptive online romances.

Imagine that, there are people out in the world who use social media to be someone they are not. One must wonder what is their ultimate gain? What are they trying to accomplish with the elaborate profiles and pictures? Why waste the time of men and women just seeking out companionship and/or sexual release? Truly this type of hoax has to be either for an ego boost of some sort? Maybe it is a "PowerPlay" or for financial gain who really knows what that person is thinking.

Sadly, a few years ago here on this site, a woman (let's use the name Marsha) on this site ended up meeting a man called Sam. Let me summarize what this sounded like to me. Sam was an "American" working in one of the oil rich countries of Africa. Marsha and Sam communicated via email over a long period of time, Sam told her his 's mom had died and his was in a "boarding school in Switzerland and taken care of by nuns. That he owned a home in Florida that was being rented currently by missionaries,

By the way, too me these details had already sounded like a story being written to set up a TV show plot. She continued to tell me that Sam had invented a way to process crude oil into usable gasoline on a local basis, not having to use a refinery. He found that he could use an older no longer manufactured piece of machinery only located in the United States rust belt (region straddling the upper Northeastern United States, the Great Lakes, and the Midwest States).

Being located in Africa for work, he wondered if she would like to join his "investment group" and they were offering a 12-15% return on all monies invested. All she would have to do is pay for the office customs documentation to ship the machinery to England. This really confused me, an American with a home in Florida, located now in Africa with a in Switzerland setting up a business venture offsite in England. Too many variables or moving parts for it to be true, at least for me. Too many details that did not fit. Well again, she felt "Sam" was her savior and would help her become a millionaire and also give her the husband/lover/hard cock she truly needed. Month 1 She sent $1500. via "Western Union" to an address and a person "Sam" suggested.

Long story short several months and $28,000 later "Sam" and the machinery were having issues with the process and needed more money. this is around the time she started communicating with me. We met for coffee and within fifteen minutes my mouth dropped wide open listening to this story. My questions were simple like; "WTF" were you thinking. Did she fly out to Africa or England to verify who they were or even take a minute and maybe spend $200-300. to hire a local private detective. Within 2 minutes using google earth, we found the address in England was pictured online as an abandoned store front, google search noted the address had been used by previous "scammers" and the home in Florida was owned and repossessed by "Countrywide". The previous owner was not "Sam" or "Samuel" it was a David (Spanish surname) and his wife.

How much time can really be saved by just asking a few "informational" questions and then using the tools that can be found free online. If you are given an email, do take a second look it over. Is is a random of letter or numbers that don't mean anything like JoeyFGCGF275 or Jane3240HGY ... we are all human and usually use phrases and words that make sense to just us, we for the most part keep things simple Joey1012 <-- 1012 is a date that we feel is important to us. Markitup@ (a phrase). Ask in your communications about where they live (or lived) and if they can suggest a favorite restaurant / store in the neighborhood (mine BTW is Lares on Pico, great Mexican food) ask what street is was on then google it to fact check it. Please for your own sanity and safety, create and use a throwaway email address created just for that dating site you are using! When you start getting spam, you know from where is came from!

Yes, it sounds like a lot of work for just meeting someone on a dating site. These ideas and my experience is to be online safe. My latest conversation here via email was with a woman who seemed just a bit off, for her youthful (31) age and location. The alarm bell started ringing when she told me her degree was a bachelors of science from University of Florida . She identified the university wrong she used FSU (Florida State University) instead of UF, as an ex NCAA football player for USC, this was a glaring mistake. Second the initials she used for her degree was a european (UK actually) designation Bsc not the type of degree we give out here in the USA or specifically that university gives out (again google fact check).

Just be careful ...... you never know what they are looking to gain from such a fraud.....

They keep on ticking. They can be local too. They describe themselves incorrectly and only want sex.
