For the Symposium "The One Piece Of Advice I'd Give"
For the Symposium "The One Piece Of Advice I'd Give" The old man sits in his rocking chair, the young man to his right. "Sir, I have done many things, though my life has been short compared to yours. I have made adventures, been on both sides of the law, travelled far and wide, had my share of passions, lusts, love, and also despair, depression, anger, hatred. I have known gain, and loss. I have eaten my fill, and starved as well. I have seen beauty, and the sheer ugliness of humanity. In all these things, I have not been as content as you are right this instance. What do I lack, what is your secret, old man?" Through it all, the old man continued to rock in his chair, but now he stops. He fixes his gaze upon this young man next to him, and in a gravelly voice, tells him. "Young man, I too was once in your place. Asking another these same questions. I found no peace in anything I did. I was always doing something to satiate my senses, my appetites, my desires. I asked that very same question of my forerunner. What was his secret?" The old man starts rocking his chair again for a few moments, pondering. He then stops, looks intently on the young man. "I found the secret when the one before me vacated this chair and I sat in it. The one piece of advice I can give is....sit on the front porch of your home, in a rocking chair, and observe it all. Let the world hustle by. True peace is when you settle down from the mad pace of everyone else, knowing you do not have to be in such a hurry." With that, the old man, stood, walked into the house, his story done. The young man stood, thought, and sat in the chair, and began to rock. Waiting for the next one to come. |

Great advice. In the midst of everyday hustle and bustle, we need to stop for a moment and enjoy the peace and tranquility of nature. "True peace is when you settle down from the mad pace of everyone else." A great reminder, Mitch. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you all for your kind words. It is something I have had to learn over the years, and I find much less drama if I sit and ponder before reacting. Taking the turtle's route instead of the hare helps me through many a difficult situation.

Two nice elements to this: First, slow down (which struck an oddly resonant chord with me). Second, pass the knowledge along. Eloquently done with a handful of words. Glad you joined the symposium, and looking forward to next month's contribution! Stop in, read, and offer comments at my "swinging as seen in the media" blog, "Confessions of a Lifestyle Man" humorlife, which is also the home of the monthly virtual symposium. There was a time when an elders opinion was valued, now the elders are just seen as out of touch.... Touche to you!
