Some places don't hire till the new years so they could be just starting to look at applicants

It's difficult to get responses to applications. If you're in the greater Cincinnati area, two places I can recommend are the Jewish Vocational Service (and you don't have to be Jewish to use it), and the One-Stop Career Center. You can also try job-hunt dot org to find more assistance.

Keep the faith, my friend.

Depends on how the job market is in your area! Here in western NC, it's totally flat. My fiancee got laid off over 2 years ago, and every job that opens up has literally hundreds of people applying for it!

Why don't you try and seduce the manager?

Some companies move with speed comparable to a common snail and take a seeming sadistic thrill from frustrating job applicants with their tardiness.
My advice is to hang in there and I will keep my fingers crossed for you
