An unrelated question, if I may: Is there a word limit per any contribution-post?
(For example, not less than 100 and not more than 500.) ?

There is absolutely, positively no lower-word limit to contributions. Actually -- and I'm trying to figure out a way to word this -- I'd love to see more image-based posts, as I view symposium contributions as a package, and being able to "flip" through them and have the words broken up by images enhances the experience.

Part of the reason the "Food" symposium was as successful as it was is that people freely posted relevant images. Go back and look at 'em: The visuals alone are mouth watering.

I'd also love to see people embed, or somehow reference, videos which were custom-made for the symposium. As I've said in the past, there are no awards or souvenir mugs for symposium... but the biggest, most elaborate mug I won't be awarding will be to the first person who offers a relevant video as a symposium contribution.

As for upper-word limits... I think the site has limits on how many words a post can contain. Not sure what it is... or I may be thinking of emails.

But as a guide, I wouldn't go much past 800 words for an essay. Reading online is a very different experience than reading the printed word: It's a lot more tiring.

One of my favorite books on editing is Richard Lanham's "Revising Prose." It's an expensive S.O.B., as academic books are (get it secondhand, if you can: Earlier editions without the software are okay), but it's worth it, worth it, worth it. When I offer writing coaching services, it's one of the books I recommend (right up there with Strunk and White's "Elements of Style").

Lanham takes people who want to become better at editing themselves through a series of exercises which streamline prose. I kid you not: I've seen essays lose 20 percent of their verbiage without losing any substantial meat. It's an electrifying book.

Tired of reading yet? This post is under 350 words. Adjust your thoughts accordingly.

Yes, a video contribution would be fantastic but I'm not the one to win that
imaginary souvenir mug.

It's true, it's a little tiring to read very long posts. That's one of the reasons I'm trying to embed images in mine - to break the monotony.

Thanks so much for answering my question and for your advice. Although I'm not an aspiring writer, these books intrigued me, I might even read them.

But, without consulting the books on editing, it's obvious that corners need to be cut.. There's just too much I want to say ...

Thank you for your help!

We'd welcome your first contribution!

Would it help to consider it a suggested posting time, rather than a deadline?

I'm looking forward to posting what you offer, when you offer it, to the master list -- I think we're going to have a fine dialog going!

It had to be that topic ... I'll pimp it in french but, since I wasn't accurate enough last time
due to the fact I didn't know the meaning of "body image" in english (I'm still unable to translate it !)
my announce will be what it can be ...
I'll try to call on visual contributions too, so the barrier of language can be bypassed.
As usual ... 1) I don't think to have an important echo 2) I'll link the pimping with the program of HNW
(quite unsuccessfully too, sigh ..)

Regards

Your interpretation of "body image" in the last symposium was as valid as anybody else's. Body image can mean a number of different things, which is why it's a good topic: I like topics that are nebulous!

As for visual/verbal contributions: You should do whatever sort of contribution you want to post: It is your blog -- you are supposed to post exactly what you want to post!

And... I have noticed that, in the last few months, the number of visitors from France who look at my blog has gone up!

I look forward to whatever you contribute!

There's never an obligation to contribute, of course, but based on the quality of your previous offerings I hope you'll at least mull the topic. I know that several female bloggers are pretty jazzed about the topic, and I'm looking forward to what they write!

Often the topics which are the most challenging provide the most interesting posts. Every symposium there are a few people who say the topic doesn't resonate with them. Some end up participating, some don't. Once one said the topic wasn't sparking anything... and ended up being inspired to post twice.

As an exercise, you might want to mull what you would say without promising yourself that you'll post it. If you think what you come up with is worth sharing, by all means do so: If not, it's a little mental stimulation for someone who has a good mind!

Either way, hope you'll read and enjoy the other contributions!
