Who Inspires You?

I saw this quote the other day and it really resonated with me:

The people we surround ourselves with will either raise or lower our standards. They either help us to become the best possible version of ourselves or encourage us to become lesser versions of ourselves.

We become like our friends. No man becomes great on his own. No woman becomes great on her own. The people around them help to make them great.

We all need people in our lives who help to raise our standards, remind us of our essential purpose, and challenge us to become the best version of ourselves.

For me, that person was my third grade teacher Ms. Reeves. That year, I had transferred to a new school and I was struggling to fit in socially. Ms. Reeves took me under her wing and helped me to recognize my potential. She supported me when I felt like giving up on myself. Being in third grade at a new school and struggling to fit in can be difficult but having that support was instrumental in learning how to overcome significant obstacles later in life.

Inquiring minds want to know, do you feel this statement is valid? Have there been people in your life who inspired you to become your best possible self? If so, I would love to hear about it.

I think the company you keep isn't so much the determining factor but certainly it can have an influence over your choices. I'd say being around people who raise your standards is definitely better for those who are easily influenced by those around them and is a good thing in general but anything taken to extremes can be a problem. As in I wonder who some of these holier-then-thou types where around when they grew up. Look at the kids of the ministers who go out and do all kinds of troublesome things. Too much in either direction can be a problem at least for some people.

But I absolutely agree that having a few people in ones life that provide a positive influence is for the better. The true nature of an individual usually comes through sooner or later though.

Paul Newman: Race Driver (my addiction), Actor (an excellent one) and Philanthropist (not something many people knew about).

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

There have been a couple of people in my life and I am grateful everyday for them and the ways they showed me how to be a positive kind of person. There is no room in my life for negative Nelly's..

Thanks for sharing your story. Like you, my sister and I have totally different personalities/lifestyles but when the situation calls for it, we find time to support each other.

So true....The voice of my dad is always playing when I consider big choices in life. But the simple support from friends has always helped me.

Aristotle, a student of Plato(428-347 BC) and teacher of Alexander the Great, studied in Plato’s Academy, where he later taught politics and rhetoric. These 3 men changed/defined western civilization (in thought and the map of the world) to a great extent.

We are social mammals who follow group think even though we claim to be independent, open minded etc. ALL of us are influenced by the good and bad company we keep, whether we like it or not. Better to change/join social groups if you want to achieve a specific goal/habit/skill.

I have a few that inspires me now, from therapy dog trainers, PTA members, people who volunteers at Special Olympics etc.

i had a teacher in high school who was the first teacher who got me to think outside the box. Mr. Berman.

a friend who i credit with giving me a soul. or at least making sure i knew the importance of recognizing i had one.

a man who helped me heal from sexual abuse.

these are people who never got accolades.

in the grander side of things. Elie wiesel was the first writer who inspired me beyond just being a great writer. what he endured, what he went on to accomplish, hi ability to love. forgive.

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

My mother is an inspiration to me. She brought up five young children on her own after dad died suddenly. She kept us on the straight and narrow but now sadly, she has alzheimer's, such a cruel fate.

It can be a person...or an incident, particularly an unfavourable result from that incident

Yes, I think this can be true. For me- I was always thinking, what would my grandfather do?

love this quote, and I believe it is true. There are many people who have helped me attain my current level, professionally, personally as well as socially. No man ( or woman) is an island.
