More Travel on the Horizon

I've had a few things on my "vanilla" bucket list for quite some time. One of these involves getting my Ph.D. I have decided that since I'm not getting any younger, I might as well start researching various programs some of which are located out-of-state. One program in particular has piqued my interest.

The school offers distance-based learning which is a prerequisite since I carry a full case load of and my roots seem to be firmly cemented here at the moment. The campus is located in Chicago. I've contacted the school and arranged for a visit on August 29th. Yes, they were generous enough to accommodate my request to meet on a Saturday.

Interestingly enough, I have a special friend that resides in that city that I intend to meet up with while I am there.

Aside from that, I seem to have quite a bit of travel on the horizon. Next weekend, I have an alumni board meeting in Wichita. A blogger that lives there has tried like hell to get me to visit so I am going to see if he would like to meet for lunch.

Another friend in St. Louis has invited me for a return trip to Hannibal for the Steampunk festival on Labor Day weekend that I attended last year. I haven't decided if I will attend. It brings back memories of the fun I had with a friend at last year's festival.

I am going to be spending a long weekend the first part of October in Wichita where I will be training to be certified in level 1 Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).

The goal of EMDR is to reduce the long-lasting effects of distressing memories by developing more adaptive coping mechanisms. The therapy uses an eight-phase approach that includes having a recall distressing images while receiving one of several types of bilateral sensory input, such as side to side eye movements. EMDR was originally developed to treat adults with PTSD; however, it is also used to treat other conditions and . (Per Wikipedia)

Finally, I'm taking my to the Albuquerque Balloon Festival the second weekend in October. We've decided to take a train there which will be a first for both of us.

I'm excited about the interesting travels I am embarking on. Hopefully the trip to Chicago can cement some decisions about my educational goals.

As for this weekend, I intend to take it easy. I might get together with a friend for a drink and some low-key fun.

There is a blogger here that likes to make fun by assigning a theme to each year, and then working to fulfill that theme. Seems you might well theme the Summer of 2015 as “Getting out and Meeting Bloggers”.

Best wishes on the Ph.D. program.

I had a roommate in college that was from Albuquerque and have long walked to go see the Balloon Festival.

Sounds fun. I took the train last year for the first time and it was great. I'm about 6ft tall and had no trouble sleeping even in a coach seat.

I could make it up to Wichita for the October trip possibly if you'd like to rendezvous. Work probably won't cooperate next weekend but keep in touch just in case.
