Introvert vs Extrovert

One of my friends has recently told me I'm the least introverted person he's ever known. And my ability and even at times willingness to just walk up to a stranger and start a conversation belies my life-long belief that I'm an introvert.

Essentially: an Introvert lives inside his/her head, focuses internally, and gains energy from alone time or very small (1 or 2 people) encounters. Mistaking introversion for shyness is a common error. Introverts prefer solitary to social activities, but do not necessarily fear social encounters like shy people do.

Extroverts focus outside themselves, and gains energy from being around large groups of people.

There's also an acknowledged third option: Ambiversion

Although many people view being introverted or extraverted as a question with only two possible answers, most contemporary trait theories measure levels of extraversion-introversion as part of a single, continuous dimension of personality, with some scores near one end, and others near the half-way mark,[11] see the Big Five personality traits. Ambiversion is falling more or less directly in the middle.[4][12] An ambivert is moderately comfortable with groups and social interaction, but also relishes time alone, away from a crowd.

Maybe I'm an Ambivert? Though really: invite me to a huge party I'd far rather sit home with my cat. Invite me to flop on your sofa for hours chatting one on one: I'm so there.

On the other hand everything is subjective and based upon circumstances, need, and just the moment itself.

Do you classify yourself as introvert or extrovert? (I know I've essentially done this poll before: we're all bloggers. We sink into our own heads and write and predominantly exhibit introvert tendencies in regards to our personal comfort zones).

I'm pretty much an introvert... not good with groups, but fabulous with one or two people.

One of my biggest problems with large groups: I was raised to be polite and do not talk over another person. One person talks, then the other talks. And keep taking turns. In large group settings everybody tends to talk over one another thus I eventually give up and shut up. My voice is too soft to power over them (in most cases), and if I'm talking and somebody else starts in - I close my mouth and wait my turn. I've never been able to get over that.

You're making my head hurt kitten ...having to think like this...

I know I am an ambivert, I fit right in with that definition. Sounds quite similar to ambidextrous...able to use both hands....ambivert...being both sides of the "vert" You know, intro/extro

I almost wrote "I'm neither introvert nor extrovert. I'm just a vert" but found the term ambivert before I made myself sound totally goofy lol.

I'm a combination of ambivert and pervert... These labels define me perfectly.

I'm an introvert. I also enjoy parties. I sometimes find a quiet place to disappear during parties for a bit of a recharge, though. Thus has it been my whole adult life. I'm hanging out with lots of folks these days. My boyfriend loves throwing parties. That's ideal for me -- I always have a place to retreat (his bedroom) if I need to be alone. I recharge just a bit, sometimes with ear plugs, then I return to frivolity.

Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale
Her infinite variety. Other women cloy
The appetites they feed, but she makes hungry
Where most she satisfies. For vilest things
Become themselves in her, that the holy priests
Bless her when she is riggish. ~~ from Antony & Cleopatra

What a great idea! Except were it me... I'd retreat with a book for "5 minutes" and come out hours later having finished a 350+ page book. "Oh! The party's over?" lol.

I am an extrovert trapped inside an introvert's body...

so, sometimes, people call me a chatty Kathy... I don't like it... but, there it is... and, other times, people don't even know I am there...

it all just depends on the stars aligning and what not...

and, that's all I have to say about that...

A story I was told by my best friend in HS:

"So and so came up to me and said "DSK sure doesn't talk much, does she?" and friend replied "You sure don't know DSK, do you?"

If I know the person, comfortable... I will chat their ear off. lol.

I'm sure you're perfectly wonderful you

I like to think of myself as a haricotvert: Bean there, done that.

Excessive punning makes a man a solitary figure, I've found...

Most punny people I know have a following... the fascination and dread combine to keep bringing them back.

I am an introvert who forces himself to be an extrovert at times in order to achieve my goals and live my life the way I want.

I'm very good with groups of any size, usually find it very hard to blend in lol. Having said that, I find being around people for extended periods exhausting and I'll disappear for a couple days to recharge. I definitely get energy from alone time.
